BRADFORD BULLETIN

VOLUME XII, ISSUE 1

FROM THE OFFICE

This 12th year of Bradford Academy is off to a great start!  We are happy to fill our halls again with happy children, eager to learn.

A few quick notes:

  • Friday clean up volunteers:  On Friday afternoons, we vacuum, clean up the bathrooms, and get classrooms ready for Sunday School.  We could use a handful of volunteers each week to help teachers. Many hands make light work! The jobs can be knocked out in no time with your help.  Please consider giving us just 15-20 minutes of your time on Friday afternoons. It’s a great way to support your teachers.
  • Immunizations:  All kindergarteners and 7th graders must turn in updated immunization records.  These were due by the first day of school.  They can be uploaded directly into TADS. If you are unable to do that, please send them to the office.
  • Uniforms:  Please remember, all students must be in French Toast Schoolbox uniforms only!  (6th – 12th graders do have some Schoolbelles items.)  If you have not ordered all of your uniform pieces, please do so ASAP.  If you are waiting on them to arrive, please let your child’s teacher know.  As always, I am happy to assist so just let me know if I can do anything for you.

FROM THE TEACHER’s DESK

Kindergarten (Mrs. Rivera & Mrs. McDorman)

This Week
  • After hearing Mr. Johnston explain the importance of straight, quiet lines we dropped off our book bags in the classroom and headed to forum. Students sat quietly listening to the headmaster describe the two rules of kindergarten; love God and love your neighbor. We learned the systems used by successful kindergartners and practiced a few fun ways to keep our minds and thoughts focused on the teacher. They may have heard an ogre sing the days of the week song, discovered that being a pink pushy pig is not a kind way to treat others, and learned that a job  done halfway leads to disaster. Our kindergarten scholars drew a picture of what they (and maybe you) looked like on the first day of school.
Music
  • We will have Music Class every Tuesday, and we will begin next Tuesday, August 20th.
P.E.
  • P.E. will start next week.  Kindergarten has P.E. on Wednesdays.
Memory Work:
  • This week we learned Proverbs 1:7. Next week we will begin working on 1Corinthians 13:4-8a.

1st Grade (Mrs. Campbell & Mrs. Morgan)

This Week
  • Nineteen eager first graders filled our classrooms on Wednesday!  Supplies are in place and systems well underway. We reviewed songs and verses from Kindergarten, dove into new memorization with a song about nouns, completed our first lessons in math and phonics, and practiced left and right by doing the Hokey Pokey!  Most importantly, we discussed many aspects of our responsibility towards one another as we learn and grow together this year. “Love never fails.” I am grateful for the privilege of watching each child develop in their love of God’s Word and His world!

2nd Grade (Mrs. Jones)

This Week
  • Second grade has had a great first week of school! I’ve loved getting to know each student just a little better through their All About Me binder covers. I was surprised to learn that one student owns 22 pets! The students also enjoyed hearing my own answers as I completed the same page. We kicked off our reading curriculum by reading Danny and the Dinosaur. Ask your child which of the dinosaur’s antics made them laugh the most! Next week we will begin all of our other subjects, including spelling. A copy of the words from Lesson 1 is in your student’s red folder if you would like to begin studying over the weekend.

3rd Grade (Mrs. Garner)

This Week
  • We are off to a fantastic start to this new school year! I am so impressed by the students’ enthusiasm for learning and instruction. We have had a wonderful time getting to know each other through various icebreakers, like “Stand Up/Hand Up/Pair Up”. During one of our class discussions, we MAY have had a time of “show me your dance moves”. Even though we have had a great time getting to know each other, we have also been very diligent in getting ourselves organized and “tuned-up” for what good students looks like. This practice included efficiently passing materials, brushing up on our cursive handwriting, and moving ourselves to our two listening positions. We also began some baseline assessments in writing, reading, spelling, and math.

Memory Work:
  • We are reviewing Proverbs 1:7 and 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a

4th Grade (Mrs. Hamilton)

This Week
  • What a wonderful beginning to the year we’ve had in fourth grade! Binders are organized, lockers are assigned, books are stacked, and minds are eager. I am so proud of each one of your children—they came into fourth grade ready to tackle challenging material and ask great questions. What a blessing it is for me to see their sense of wonder for literature, math, science, and history! We jumped right into our first book, The Door in the Wall, and worked through the first few lessons of math; we also discussed the importance of studying history and science. I am greatly looking forward to this year!

5th Grade (Ms. Windes)

This Week
  • Our first week went really smoothly! It has been a very easy transition from 4th grade!  We began the week by discussing precisely what it means and looks like to love God and our neighbor in the classroom. The students have been reviewing old routines, learning new ones, and are already settling into efficient habits! We also just started to dabble in some of the subjects. We finished our first math lesson, looked at a wide sweep of our history time period, discussed Tolkien, began reading The Hobbit, and cracked open our Latin books to chant and learn our first chapter of Latin vocabulary. Students also applied for first quarter class “jobs” which will be announced next week.  I can tell we are going to accomplish a lot this year! I’m looking forward to watching these students grow and mature as the year passes.

Upcoming Tests:

Friday, August 16:

     – Latin, ch. 1

     – History – Prince Henry the Navigator

     – Spelling – Rule 1 list, The Doubler

6th Grade (Mrs. Garrett)

This Week
  • The class focused on reviewing the concept of loving one another, serving one another, and as sixth graders, modeling that servant leadership for the rest of the students at the lower school. The students also began to work through poetry with alliteration as the focus. Next week we will focus on King David’s poetry in the Psalms. A review of the overarching lay out of the Bible, the various authors, testaments and epistles brought forth fruitful discussion. The students also began to recite I John, and to discuss John the disciple versus John the Baptist. The class also began to look carefully at vocabulary and how one can utilize new words in conversation and writing. Finally, a review of mathematical equations with addends, subtrahends, quotients and products as the key subjects allowed the students to step back into mathematics with confidence. To conclude the week, the students practice shading to create a stunning sphere using pencil. I am looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and seeing God’s hand move in the lives of these students. They are each a unique reflection of the beauty of our Maker.
