SUMMER READING:  As always, our rising 1st – 6th graders have the opportunity to keep their minds sharp, explore some fun adventures, and earn house points through our Summer Reading program.  Each student has the opportunity to earn 10 points by reading books on this list.  Students are allowed to read from lists above their grade level, but not below their grade level (for points).  We have pulled out selections from each list that students may check out from (and return to) the school. The library will be opened most weekdays from 9-4.  You might want to text Mr. Johnston at 336-263-1262 to make sure the school is open before you come. ***See e-mail for a link to the list!***

REQUIRED SUMMER READING:  rising 7th – 12th – Students have a few books on their list that are required to complete before the next school year.  (They are included in the list that will be attached to the e-mail.) These books are available in the school library as well.  Go ahead and get going on it, kids! You’ll be glad you did!

FROM THE TEACHER’s DESK

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Kindergarten (Mrs. McDorman and Mrs. Rivera)

Final Week
  • We have finished strong! This week was filled with review games, reading, and writing. Field day proved to be full of good natured competition and end of year fun! Some of the teachers managed to stay dry during the water balloon battle, but so did some of the students! We will have to remedy both next year. I hope your year has been as enjoyable as it was for us. We will miss your students as they move on to the next level in their academic careers!
  • Soli Deo gloria!  To God alone be the glory!

Music
  • This week we began class with prayer and the students read the weekly praise verse together. Then we spent some time learning and singing the song, “I Will Sing of the Mercies of the Lord Forever,” that goes along with the weekly praise verse. In our music lesson, we read a worksheet that was a biography about John Phillip Sousa. Then, we used the last half of class to color and draw as we listened to a video documentary about the life and music of John Phillip Sousa.

1st Grade (Mrs. Campbell)

Some days as the students gather for lunch under the pavilion, you may hear these words wafting through the air: “Praise God from Whom all blessings flow; praise Him all creatures here below…”  It’s a beautiful sound! Another year of classes, events, programs, projects, and field trips is in the books, and every fast second of it was given by our loving Father. Now we say goodbye to precious lives we’ve grown to love and commend them to the next stop on their educational journey.  First graders, remember your Creator and admire His handiwork as you explore this summer. Praise Him all creatures here below!

2nd Grade (Mrs. Jones)

What a wonderful year we have had in second grade! God has blessed us beyond measure and I am truly thankful. DON’T FORGET: Any second grader who reads all ten books for the reading competition will get one more trip to the rewards box at the beginning of next year. Enjoy your time together this summer!

3rd Grade (Mrs. Mitchell)

I was grateful to squeeze in a few more of our regular lessons this week.  Students have a packet in their red folders of math lessons that we covered and completed side A (as much as time allowed).  They should be able to finish side B at your request. They also brought home lessons in their black folders on Thursday that we did not cover.  Some students wanted to try to figure those out. I told them that those are completely optional.

We had a great time of competition at Field Day.  The Lord blessed us with great weather and we had no injuries!  We finished the day by cleaning up the room and singing favorite songs and chants.  Finally, it’s always a blessing to hear them recite for the Verse Bee. It’s a perfect culmination to the year.

Do lots of reading this summer!

4th Grade (Mrs. Hamilton)

Thank You for a Great Year!
  • Books have been put away, desks scrubbed, and pencils sharpened in the eager anticipation of fifth grade. What a privilege it has been to teach your wonderful children this past year! Their eagerness from the beginning of the year has turned into knowledge; their fear into courage; and their excitement into laughter. It has truly been a wonderful, inspired, and blessed year filled with great memories. I pray that each one of them continues to grow and mature as they are getting ready to take on the fifth grade by storm!

5th Grade (Ms. Windes)

Wow, the year is over! It has been an incredible year with an incredible group of students! They dedicate themselves to learning and loving and encouraging one another in a way that enables them to accomplish impressive feats! Your students have completed thousands of math problems, memorized tens of dates, learned about centuries of history, read tales of dragons, pirates, and wars, studied hundreds of Latin words, tucked whole chapters of the Word into their hearts, and so much more. They have worked hard. Beyond academics, however, I also hope and trust that each of the students can look back over the year and honestly say, “I have matured.” I am praying they will continue to grow, develop, and mature in both the skills God has given them as well as a deep and transforming knowledge of God over the summer months and in the coming years. Continue to ask good questions, continue to love learning, continue to encourage and love one another, and have a super summer!

Art
  • Students worked more on their masterpieces, but they are not quite finished. I sent them home with the students and hope that at some point they will pull them out over the summer and enjoy completing them!

Reading

  • We barely began reading Treasure Island and being introduced to the characters and plot, but thank you so much to the parents who put together our fun evening to watch the movie! Take the time to finish the book over the summer – it will count as one of your summer reading books!

6th Grade (Mrs. Garrett)

New Testament Survey
  • The books of Jude and Revelation were revealed this week as the class finished their survey of the New Testament. In addition, the class practiced sharing their faith by means of a testimony.  by studying three versions of Peter’s admonition, “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1 Peter 3:15-16. In addition, the students watched a video in relation to the Space Race where an astronaut shared his testimony of God’s work in his own life. This reminder was an inspiring way to end the year, encouraging the class to share what they have learned about Jesus with others this summer.
Literature
  • The Hiding Place wraps up with Corrie’s life touching thousands as she creates a home for the disabled, and speaks around the world on forgiveness. Corrie’s life reminds the class of the eternal value of suffering for Jesus, and God’s powerful ability to bring light to even the darkest of storms.
Math
  • Multiplying powers of 10/Multiplying numbers in scientific notation, Algebraic terms, Order of operations with signed numbers/Functions, Number families
History
  • The class took an assessment on the Space Race, and then concluded the year with an overview of modern America and God’s sovereign role over all governments and cultures.
Science
  • Acids and bases provided the final experiment for the students as they practiced the scientific method and iteration using litmus paper, distilled water, bleach, orange juice, vinegar, coffee, green tea, black tea and soda.
Writing/Grammar
  • The class practiced detecting dependent and independent clauses in contrast to phrases.
Latin
Music

In our music lesson, we read a worksheet that was a biography about John Phillip Sousa. Then, we used the last half of class to color and draw as we listened to a video documentary about the life and music of John Phillip Sousa.
Art
  • Working with clay produced lovely sculptures of animals, ring holders, pencil holders and candle lanterns. “But now, O Lord, You are our Father; we are the clay, and You our potter; and all we are the work of Your hand.” (Isaiah 64:8) What a tangible way to remember that we are like clay.
Logic
  • The students ended the year with the fallacies: appeal to tradition and appeal to high-tech. They also found examples of fallacies in magazines such as appeal to tradition.
Memory Work:
  • The students were encouraged to pick a chapter of the Bible this summer and memorize it, such as Romans 8.

Upcoming: Required Summer Reading, Bradford camps and time outdoors enjoying God’s creation.

7th Grade Science:
  • We wrapped up our final unit on the Age of the Earth with an exam. It has been a joy and privilege to study the celestial sphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere with these students this year. Our final class allowed us time to revisit our favorite topics for this year and to look forward to the physics and chemistry we’ll study next year.
8th Grade Science:
  • We ended the year with a bang as the students raced their self-propelled vehicles. Most students chose to build mousetrap cars, but we also had successful submissions of balloon cars and rubberband cars. It was a red-letter year with SIX vehicle submissions that broke last year’s distance record. A vehicle designed by Emma Thrasher and Rachel Manning set a new distance record, traveling a stunning 19.95 meters! Congratulations to all the car designers for their hard work.

Mr. Hamilton

7th Grammar/Comp
  • The great academic paper adventure is over! Students have worked hard and finally turned in their final drafts.
