- SOCKTOBER! Did you know that socks are the least donated item in most shelters? Every night in the United States, an estimated 745,000 people live on the streets. This October, we want to prove that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless. We will take our donations to the Piedmont Rescue Mission in Burlington. There will be a collection box at the lower campus. We have partnered with a local business that will allow us to purchase a dozen socks for $5.00. Your student may bring in $5.00 and give it to their teacher or submit it to the office. This will be the fourteenth year we have participated in this important ministry. Our collection will end on Nov. 6th.
LOWER SCHOOL IMPORTANT NOTES:
- FROM MRS. MITCHELL: We were very grateful for Tom Spencer’s visit to both campuses last week. In his role involving school accreditation, with the Association of Classical and Christian Schools, he has visited 100 schools across the country. He said that Bradford Academy is in his top tier of schools that understand and implement the paideia of classical & Christian schools. We were humbled that he took note of certain practices that he found to be exceptional. I personally am grateful for Mr. Johnston’s dedication and wisdom, which laid the foundation for the excellence observed in your children and their daily rhythms and interactions. Mrs. Johnston is also to be commended for the excellent standards she upholds in every sphere of her communication and support. Our dedicated staff lovingly and faithfully teach and train in order to create the paideia (enculturation) that we call “The Bradford Way,” a way that glorifies God and fulfills the mission of His work here every day. All praise to God for His faithfulness to us and this blessing to you!

FROM THE TEACHER’S DESK
GRAMMAR SCHOOL
Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Grubb and Mrs. Weber)
- We have reached the end of a great first quarter of TK! The highlight of our week was our TK Camp Promise day. Students enjoyed a great day yesterday where they had many of our lessons in a tent, sang camp songs, enjoyed a camp snack and made his/her special letter using items found outside in the forest. This special day went along with the story of Abraham and the journey he made. We also learned about God’s promise to Abraham that he would give him more descendents than the number of stars in the sky. The 5 day students were able to complete a starry night painting that we will display in our classroom for a few weeks. In math, students practiced sorting and creating a graph. Students also worked on identifying and writing the numbers 4 and 5. A few of our centers included: identifying the main character of a story, matching linking cubes to a number, counting words in a sentence, making shapes using play doh, and looking at letter constellations. Students began learning a new Bible verse this week, Psalm 119:105 as well as 2 new nursery rhymes. We look forward to a great second quarter. Have a great fall break!
Lower School Art (Mrs. Knight)
3rd & 4th
- Students continue to work on their art memory work and to diligently observe and sketch the Mona Lisa. Several began coloring this week. We are aiming to match the colors used by da Vinci by blending carefully-chosen colored pencils. We want to fill the area so that no white paper is showing through. We will have to wait to finish and mount these after fall break. Enjoy your week! Take time to OBSERVE God’s beautiful world. He is the greatest artist!
Lower School PE (Mrs. Bennington)
- Students did a great job this week following directions, running relay races, playing various tag games, and completing team building challenges. Students are growing in their understanding and demonstration of team work. We will continue to work on team building activities and sportsmanship in the second quarter. Hope everyone has a restful and fun Fall Break.
Lower School Music (Mrs. Bennington)
- Students did a great job this quarter learning all four verses of the hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy” for memory. Students also did a great job in adding in harmony parts to “Non Nobis”. Third and Fourth grade students are off to a great start on recorder. We will continue to work on three note songs and recognizing pitches when reading music. We will also continue to work on putting rhythm and beat together. Hope everyone has a restful and fun Fall Break.
Kindergarten (Mrs. Rivera and Miss Burdeshaw)
This Week:
- Our kindergarten scholars have officially finished their first quarter! We are thankful to the Lord for their perseverance and hard work. In math, we reviewed how to count and write the numbers 6 to 9 and the ordinal positions: first, second, third, fourth, and fifth. In phonics and cursive writing, we spent time going over the clockface letters, loop letters, and hump letters, along with their respective phonograms. Next quarter, we will begin learning p, r, s, and t! In history, we discussed the biblical figure, Abraham, and how he obediently followed God’s commands to start afresh in a new land. God formed a covenant with Abraham, promising him abundant descendants reminiscent of the stars in the sky. In art, we reviewed the color wheel; specifically the primary and secondary colors. We also discussed warm vs. cool colors. In science, we finished our unit on the five senses. This week we discussed the sense of hearing. The students had the opportunity to see what the inside of an ear looks like and learn the different parts that make up our ears. We hope that you have a wonderful and restful fall break!
Memory Work:
Review all first quarter verses
1st Grade (Ms. Griffin & Mrs. Smith)
This Week:
- Of course, the highlight of the week was the field trip to Alamance Battleground! This was a great way for the kids to get a glimpse into the life of early settlers with the old house, clothing, cooking, etc. It is also a good introduction to the beginning of the revolution with the battle of Alamance being a tipping point for many. This year, the fifth graders joined us. The 5th graders will be studying much of the same things in history that we study in first grade, but at a deeper level. It was neat to have the students and parents back again after taking them 4 years ago. Back in the classroom, the students learned various ways to subtract from 10 or less and completed chapter 3 in math. Spelling lists A – D were reviewed by writing on whiteboards, playing sparkle, having a spelling bee, and filling in their personal dictionaries (Words I Use to Write books). They practiced their Bible verses by copying them in their Memory Binders. We finished Pocahontas last week; which told the story of the settlement of Jamestown from the Native American point of view. This week in history we read Jamestown, New World Adventure. This book was about the first settlers in Jamestown, from the settlers perspective. Work continued on the packets for the four layers of the earth in science. In writing, the students practiced all the lower case loop letters they have reviewed so far this year. They are learning to make the letters flow easily with correct spacing. We pray everyone has a splendid fall break! Be sure to read some good books with your kids and play some math games.
Memory Work:
- Review all verses and catechisms so far.
Upcoming:
- Fall Break – Next week
- Beginning of quarter two – Monday, October 12th
2nd Grade (Miss Verroi & Mrs. Fredrick)
This Week:
- We have had a fantastic final week of the first quarter! The students have been hard at work as we have reviewed much of what we have learned so far. This week, we have started two-digit addition, an exciting concept for second graders! We have continued in Ancient Egypt, and have learned much about the First Intermediate Period. After the marvelous Old Kingdom in Egypt where magnificent pyramids were built, it was sad to see how Egypt declined due to civil war along with drought and famine. We have enjoyed spending the week reading about the Monarch Butterfly migration and are eager for cooler weather! We hope you have a fantastic fall break. We are eager for all the exciting things that come with the second quarter!
Table Talk:
- Ask your child what they remember learning about Monarch butterflies.
- Ask your child what their favorite book of the first quarter is.
Memory Work:
- Hebrews 11:8-10
3rd Grade (Mrs. Clark & Mrs. Martin)
This Week
Genesis 8:22 tells us that “as long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” Students enjoyed comparing how the ancient Olympics shaped our modern-day Olympics. In math, we have been practicing multiplication with different strategies. In science, we finished the last touches on our biome projects and presented them. We have learned about working as a team and how to research a topic using books. What a great end to a fun-filled quarter!
4th Grade (Mrs. Graham and Mrs. Rankin)
Week 8 Mohammed and Islam
In our study of Mohammed and the founding of Islam, we emphasized the freedom we have in Christ, and the source of the fruit of our faith, the Holy Spirit. Our students compared and contrasted the differences between Islam and Christianity, emphasizing the importance of worshipping the one true God. Your children are eager to understand and discuss what is True! In math, we worked with models, applying the Distributive Property in order to fully see multiplication. Possessive noun adjectives showed up in both Grammar and Latin this week, reinforcing this concept of a noun becoming an adjective. Our students reviewed Latin with some friendly competition and funny stories with pictures. We polished up our Botany journals and look forward to moving into Earth Science in Quarter Two.
Students are understanding both the deep comfort– and the possible discomfort– of having a God who knows us so well. We discussed that it is His great Love that makes Psalm 139 a source of great encouragement and comfort.
Ask Your Child About…
- How might Mohammed have come in contact with Christian ideas and stories?
- How do we make words possessive in Latin?
- Why do we sometimes fear what God knows about us? Why do we take comfort in His deep knowledge of all our ways?
Upcoming Memory Work:
Psalm 139:1-10
