FROM THE OFFICE

IMPORTANT NOTES:  

  • Upcoming field trips:  There are upcoming field trips for 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades.  Permission slips will be sent electronically in the next week.  Please keep an eye out for them.  These field trips are only possible with the help of our parents who are willing to serve as a chaperone.  We have been blessed throughout the years by the eagerness of our parents to serve in this way.  In an effort to streamline our processes, we are implementing some updated protocols:
    • Field trip fees for students are now covered by tuition. (Excludes overnight trips.) The school will include chaperone tickets with the group purchase and then invoice the chaperones separately through FACTS.
    • Parents who are willing to serve as a chaperone, supervising more than one student, should indicate that on the permission slip.  Bradford Academy staff will review the forms and select the chaperones.  For the safety of our students, chaperones are asked not bring other children or family members on the trip. 
    • Other parents and family members who are not serving as a chaperone and want to tag along on the trip may purchase their ticket at the field trip site upon arrival.  These tickets will not be included in the group purchase.  Please note that some field trip locations limit the number of people who attend.
    • Chaperone protocols will be sent for review and signature.

LOWER SCHOOL IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • FROM MRS. MITCHELL:  Please join us at the lower school for parent prayer on Thursday mornings at 7:50, beginning next week.  Even if you can only come once or only occasionally we would welcome the opportunity to pray together for our students and staff.  This commitment of about 10 minutes is a time for: thanksgiving for the blessing of this educational choice for our children; confession of our need for wisdom to guide each soul to know the Lord and for specific needs of each class, and also for God’s direction concerning the long term goals of the school.  This continues to be a blessing to those who come and we hope you’ll join us in the carport for this important work.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Grubb and Mrs. Weber)

  • We introduced apples in TK this week to prepare for our time in the kitchen next week where we will make apple pies! Students discussed the parts of an apple, described and tasted a few different types of apples, learned several apple songs, and listened to a few books about apples. TK students practiced 4 safety drills to prepare for safety week at the lower campus next week. We began learning how to properly hold a crayon and began our pre-writing by working in our green writing books this week. We will continue our work in these books through the 3rd quarter. A few of our centers included: finishing Creation books, building & drawing Mat Man, practicing cutting & pasting, labeling pictures, identifying the top of letters (which is where we begin when writing), a letter hunt for our special letter, and learning the life cycle of an apple. TK students finished our study of Creation this week by finishing Creation books which came home with your child. Ask your child to sing the song! (Lyrics are on the front cover of the book.) Next week we will learn about Adam & Eve.

3rd
  • Third graders completed their sketchbook covers using various elements of shape. We continued learning  the Fundamental Laws of Drawing song and began learning about our artist of the quarter, Leonardo da Vinci.  Ask your child where he was from and what was unusual about how he wrote in his sketchbooks. 
4th
  • In fourth grade art, we continued learning about the seven elements of art and used them to decorate our sketchbook covers. We learned about the life of Leonardo da Vinci, the artist of the quarter.

  • Students worked hard in  PE this week with following directions, practicing procedures, and playing various directional games. Students are working on developing good sportsmanship qualities.

  • Students did a great job in music this week following directions and practicing procedures.  Second, third, and fourth graders continued working on singing two part harmony in “Non Nobis”.   The same students also started learning about what the terms rhythm and beat are in music and how they work together. All students  worked on the  first and second verse of “Holy, Holy, Holy”.  Third and Fourth grade students also started playing recorder. Third and Fourth grade students did well demonstrating proper playing technique and playing basic rhythm lines.

This Week: 

Our kindergarten scholars had a busy four day week! In math, we reviewed how to count and write the numbers 0-10, and we worked on our problem solving skills by using a map. In phonics, we introduced the cursive loop letters: b, e, f, h, k, and l. The students are doing a great job at recognizing the letters along with their respective sounds. In art, we used our knowledge of the different types of lines and drew a cat. Next week we will draw a mouse! In science, we continued our unit on the five senses. This week we learned about the sense of touch. The students had the opportunity to make a hand craft with a different texture on each finger. Ask your child if they have a favorite one!

This Week: 
  • This week, the first grade students learned more about related facts (commutative property of addition), missing addends, doubles, doubles plus one, and breaking down numbers. They also worked really hard on problem solving. We had fun reading our first Frog and Toad story of the year. In History, we continued reading and talking about Christopher Columbus. In grammar, the students practiced copying silly sentences, making sure to capitalize the first letter and not forget the punctuation. In cursive, the kids practiced new strokes and the lower case letters d, g, and o. In art, they learned about line, dot, and angle “families”. Ask them to sing the “Elements of Art” song to you. Besides doing list C in spelling, the students learned about compound words, pronouns, and how to make sentences using our spelling words. We had a short, but full week!

This Week:
  • The students are off to a wonderful start in second grade and continue to be eager to learn and participate in class.  The students continue to enjoy the adventures of eight-year-old Jonathan as he travels alone over the mountain in our new book The Bears on Hemlock Mountain by Alice Dalgliesh.  The illustrations by Helen Sewell gave the students good inspiration as they illustrated their own versions of scenes from the story.  In science we continued to study our fearfully and wonderfully made body as we learned about the sense of hearing.  Please continue to help your child as they prepare to share with the class one of their favorite childhood books.  The presentations will begin next week.  This is a great opportunity for the students to learn to speak in front of a group and also share a bit of themselves with the class.

This Week  

In The Iliad, Paris and Helen’s decision to run away together to Troy had dastardly consequences for both the Trojans and the Greeks. In science, students started researching their biome projects and observed some of the beautiful habitats and ecological systems God created to sustain them.  In history, we learned about the Phoenician Civilization and their 26-letter alphabet (which did not include ANY vowels). Finally, in math, students reviewed three-digit addition. What a full (but shorter) week we have had!

This Week

It has been another full and meaningful week of learning! In Math, we continued strengthening our understanding of place value in addition and practiced solving problems using organized lists.
We enjoyed a beautiful day outdoors dissecting flowers and taking a closer look at how seeds are formed in God’s creation. The students were also delighted to observe the growth of their own seeds, giving us another opportunity to marvel at God’s wonderful design and provision.
In Latin, we cracked the “case” of Latin nouns! Through chants and motions, we learned to identify the different jobs Latin nouns can have and were reminded that Latin is a language of many endings but few words.
We also reflected on the Council of Chalcedon (451), where wise leaders searched the Scriptures and affirmed that Christ is both fully divine and fully human, united in one person. While there are truths we cannot fully grasp, we can rest confidently in the truth that God’s Word is always true.
This week we also memorized Philippians 4:8 and used it as an opportunity to meditate on the things that are true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. We can now recite Philippians 4:4–8 together!

5th-6th Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Sixth grade did a great job reviewing the basics of playing from last year and working on several rhythm exercises. New sixth grade  students are doing a great job getting caught up and returning students are doing well making more mature sound. Students will be tested on either 1.1-1.20 or their Concert Bb scale. Fifth grade worked on counting rhythms, reading music, and how to use their lips to make a sound on their mouthpieces. Students also learned how to put their instruments together,  take them apart , and how to play their first note. Students will have a test on 1.5 or 1.6 next Thursday. Please encourage your child to practice what we work on in class at home. 
7th-8th Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students also did a great job playing through several book exercises.. A lot of focus was put on posture, breathing,  making good sounds, range, articulation, and dynamics. Students will have a test on Warm up Set 1, Option 1 this Tuesday. Students also started learning their full range Concert Bb scale and arpeggio. Please encourage your child to practice what we work on in class at home. Just a reminder students will need their Foundations for Superior Performance  book by next week. 
High School Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students also did a great job playing through several book exercises and other pieces of music. A lot of focus was put on posture, breathing,  making good sounds, range, articulation, and dynamics.  Students spent a lot of time on their full-range concert F and Bb scale and arpeggio. Students will have a test on their Concert Bb scale and arpeggio next Wednesday and/or Friday. Please continue to encourage your child to practice what we work on in class at home.

5th – 8th Choirs Hymn of the Week: I Need Thee Every Hour
  • 5th Grade Choir continued to work through eighth-note rhythm patterns and full octave Solfeggio. We also went down into the stairwell to listen to our sound waves and learn how to sing in tune based on our sound waves lining up.
  • 6th Grade Choir continued to work through sixteenth-note rhythm patterns as well as learning how to sing in rounds. We also went down into the stairwell to listen to our sound waves and learn how to sing in tune based on our sound waves lining up.
  • 7th/8th Grade Choir wrapped up our first unit on minor keys.
High School Choir/Bradford Chorale – Hymn of the Week: How Great Thou Art
  • We worked rhythms in ¾ time as well as continued to fine tune our Fire Station Performance Songs (September 25th). We especially focused on tuning this week.

This Week
  • We continue to learn about early exploration of America and covered four of the Spanish explorers this week. Our trek through Middle Earth has brought us new characters and lots of interesting adventures. We discussed Biblical leadership and wrote an opinion piece about the dwarves’ leader, Thorin Oakenshield. One of our many goals at Bradford is to develop strong, godly leaders and we can learn to do this by critiquing examples of leaders, good and bad, from history, literature and the Bible. We finished our skeletal unit and began our muscular unit in science class. We hope you all enjoyed a restful, long weekend!

5th Art
  • In art this week, fifth graders have reviewed the Fundamental Laws of Drawing song as well as the elements of art. We continued working on our grid sketches of the Mona Lisa. We have to be careful to observe the lines and curves and their location on each grid square. This in itself is a great way to mimic da Vinci since he was passionate about observing carefully. We have begun to use colored pencils to seek to match da Vinci’s colors. It will be challenging since he used layer upon layer of translucent oil paints to create the unique SFUMATO effect. Ask me what this means.

6th Reading and Literature
  • We finished reading The Sign of the Beaver and discussed the impact of Matt’s decision to stay at the cabin rather than leave with Attean and his family. Students considered how this choice demonstrated Matt’s growing maturity, courage, and commitment to keeping his word.
6th Grammar and Writing
  • Students completed the rough drafts of their narrative essays, using editing checklists and peer reviews to strengthen their writing. They applied grammar skills such as subject-verb agreement, varied sentence structure, and properly punctuated dialogue to engage the reader.
6th Bible
  • Students continued their study of the Gospel of Matthew, reading through chapter 7 and taking notes on Matthew’s intended audience. We considered how his audience shaped the details and themes he emphasized in presenting the life and teachings of Christ.
6th History
  • Students studied their next history card on slavery, examining how the invention of the cotton gin and the growing demand for cotton intensified the slave trade. We discussed how the economic interests contributed to this moral injustice.
6th Math
  • Students began dividing whole numbers and decimals by decimals, using place-value understanding to reason through each step. They also learned how inverse operations can be used to check their work and deepen their number sense.

  • Your 6th grader enjoyed the beautiful weather this week, as we had class outside one day. Using what we learned about the importance of having only one independent variable in an experiment,  we observed the time it takes for Alka-Seltzer to dissolve in different kinds of water.  We are learning the importance of thinking like and behaving like scientists in preparation for an individual science investigation project, which will be introduced next week.

  • This week, our students learned how to spot a genetic fallacy (which attacks the source of the argument, not the issue itself) and the tu quoque fallacy (which discredits the opponent for doing the very thing they are arguing against).

  • This week we jumped right into our charcoal shoe drawings. In true Da Vinci fashion, we studied the object set before us thoroughly before beginning to sketch out what we saw. Students will use a range of grays in charcoal to create realistic shoe drawings in the weeks ahead.

7th Omnibus
  • Literature: This week, we read the Code of Hammurabi, comparing laws shaped by a Babylonian worldview with those shaped by a biblical worldview. Students quickly discovered that they would much rather live under laws shaped by a biblical worldview! We ended the week preparing for a mock trial on Monday, in which students will try the same case under both Mosaic Law and the Code of Hammurabi and evaluate which legal system they believe provides the most just outcome. 
  • History: Students took their unit test on Ancient Mesopotamia. Next week, we will begin reading Exodus and learning about Ancient Egypt.
  • Composition: Students are working to complete the rough drafts of their comparison papers, which are due Monday, September 14. We are learning that the writing process is: write, rest, rewrite!

7th Science
  • Our Bradford 7th graders dug into our study of pedology this week (pun intended). Pedology is the study of soil.  We learned about preferred pH in soil and used our homemade cabbage juice pH indicator to observe color changes in acidic and basic solutions.  We also learned about soil nutrients and were introduced to the nitrogen cycle…more on that next week.  We’ll put all our knowledge of these things together soon as we begin our “Bean Seed Project” next week.

7th Pre-Algebra
  • This week’s lessons included converting between fractions and decimals, evaluating exponents, and calculating the area of rectangles and complex polygons. As the difficulty of daily math lessons increases, students are encouraged to seek help early before becoming overwhelmed when they’re confused. Tutors are available daily Monday through Thursday in the lunchtime Tutoring Lab.

  •  We have been hard at work creating our original comic strips. Students spent this week working on “roughs” in which they will use to create a final comic strip. We also continue to review and go over our artist of the quarter, Leonardo Da Vinci.

  • This week, the students finished understanding the Ad Fontem (against the source) fallacies. We specifically studied the Tu Quoque fallacy (which discredits the opponent for doing the very thing they are arguing against) and the Genetic fallacy (which attacks the source of the argument, not the issue itself).

  • Students have received their own copy of Athanasius’s On the Incarnation, and have begun reading.  In history, we have begun our unit on the Fall of Rome and the rise of Christian monasticism.

  • After a month of learning HOW scientists think and work, we began our study of physical science in earnest this week.  Your 8th grader learned about the branches of physical science: physics (the study of the interactions between matter and energy)  and chemistry (the study of the structure and behavior of matter).  We discussed physical and chemical properties of matter and observed various physical and chemical changes.  Using what we’ve studied about the scientific method and the importance of managing our variables in a scientific investigation, your 8th grader worked with a lab partner to design a simple experiment, demonstrating a chemical change, which we will perform next week.

8th Algebra I
  • This week was all about solving algebraic equations. We used the additive, subtractive, multiplicative, and division properties of equality in order to solve for an unknown. We even learned how to deal with equations written with fractions, mixed numbers, and decimals. The tutoring lab is open Monday through Thursday and is an excellent resource for students struggling in Algebra.

  • We have been hard at work studying in detail color nuances. We will use these nuances to create famous works of art with magazine collage. The intentionality of color choice leads to beautiful recreations of these famous works of art.

  • 10th-12th graders have the opportunity to attend the ACC College Fair on Tuesday, September 29 from 10:30-12:30.

Seniors

  • NC State’s Parks Scholarship application season is open.
  • UNC-Charlotte’s Levine Scholarship application season is open.
  • 12th graders should continue to apply to colleges, research and apply for scholarships, and seek out internships and jobs that help them learn about various careers, regardless of college intentions.
  • 12th graders should take the SAT this fall and consider taking it in the Spring as well as the ACT.  They can take the CLT on their own as well on select dates each semester.

Juniors

  • 11th graders are required to take the ACT during this school year in order to receive the NC Opportunity Scholarship.
  • 11th graders may take the PSAT at BCA (Burlington Christian Academy) on Wednesday, October 7 from 7:45 AM-11:00AM.
  • They are encouraged to take the SAT in the Spring and can take the CLT on their own on select dates.

Discussions to have as your child approaches 11th and 12th grades:

  • Do you have to go to college to be successful?
  • Do I need to attend graduate school to participate in my career of interest?

  • The students have nearly finished their unit 2 material on the Reformation and the religious wars that followed it. We have traced out how regions split and gained new independence, as well as how the principle of religious liberty slowly developed through three treaties across one hundred years of European religious and political conflict. The students will take a test next Thursday (9/17).

  •  We finished The Pilgrim’s Progress and took a test over it. We will begin our Shakespeare unit next week.

9th Rhetoric
  • Students did well on their quiz on the three rhetorical appeals and the four aspects of ethos.  This week we are focusing on the inner mechanics of the logos appeal – Aristotle’s discussion of syllogism and enthymeme.  Ask your student why logical syllogisms do not persuade audiences, and why enthymemes do.

  • Leviticus has been our Bible book this week – it is full of strange rules, laws, and regulations that are meant to keep God’s people distinct from the nations – holy, consecrated, pure, clean, and set-apart

9th Biology
  • This week, we continued to analyze the evidence presented in defense of the hypothesis of macroevolution. This week we assessed the evidence presented by the geological column, the fossil record, and the Cambrian explosion. Ask your student whether this evidence supports or refutes the hypothesis of macroevolution.
9th Geometry
  • We continued to practice using our reasoning skills to write both algebraic and geometric proofs using the two-column method. Learning to write two-column proofs is a challenging process because it requires students to think clearly and argue logically. We ended the week with our second unit test.

9th and 11th Art Foundations
  • We have begun our study of our Artist of the Quarter, Leonardo Da Vinci. The students always enjoy discovering the connections between Leonardo, Michelangelo, and Raphael and their very public arguments. In order to understand these artists we also study what is happening in Florence, Italy in 1400’s and we try to understand the worldview and philosophy of those in influential positions.

  • This week we finished our discussions of measurement, and the students took their second test of Q1.

  • Early in the week, we continued work on representations of general functions, focusing on translating key features from symbolic form to graphical form and vice-versa. We then homed in on linear functions, especially applications of slope and rate of change.

10th Literature
  • 10th graders wrote an in-class essay comparing or contrasting Aesop’s Fables with the Old Testament book of Proverbs.  They began learning about background information for the Old Testament book of Job.  This book is a tremendous help for the Chrisitan–a Biblical acknowledgement of suffering and how it draws us to God; we are looking at it additionally as a book of poetry in line with other wisdom literature studied this quarter.

  • Students completed their material on Ancient Israel and have now begun to study the peoples from the Ancient Near East who would significantly impact Israel (Phoenicians, Assyrians, Babylonians and Persians).

  • Students learned of the Niceno-Constantinopolitan (AD381) response to the Pneumatomachian heresy. 
  • There will be a test on Unit 1 on Thursday (9/17). This test will cover the Biblical framework for creedalisms, the origin and context of the Apostles’ Creed, and the first 300 years of periodic Christian persecutions. Students received study guides for this test on Thursday (9/10).
  • Students should be working on their Apostles’ Creed papers as they are due on Thursday, September 24th.

  • We wrapped up practice with limits at and to infinity, then took our Units 1-2 Test on Friday.
11th Physics
  • We finished the book-drop experiment, which, combined with discussion and video evidence, built our conceptual understanding of air resistance. We continued to hone our skills with kinematic equations, then worked on cumulative review for Monday’s test.

11th Apologetics
  • This week students studied nihilism, which asserts that truth statements, and therefore all judgments of goodness and badness, are entirely made up.  To their credit, the nihilists seemed upset about this, but without any moral structure to tell them they are upset, we didn’t think that sending a condolence card would be appropriate.  We did, though, run a little experiment in nihilism during classtime:   “”Many wombats led the altȕng from bilgewaters of orange soda land “There are no right answers.  Circle the right answer plume dance pas^ ⤵ pringles unite ∞   ∞∞! ∞∞∞   ∞∞∞∞  BALCONE 76^&.“”  Rumors exist that Dr. Wright graded a student’s quiz by eating a bite of it.  Next week, we rev up existentialism.

  • We’ve completed our study of limits and taken our first test.  We also began considering our second major topic for the course – differentiation with a basic intro contrasting average rate of change with instantaneous rate of change.
