  • Hot Lunch:  The Senior class is providing the opportunity for students to receive hot lunches every Wednesday as a fundraiser for their trip to Rome!  You ORDER HERE.  Remember to order by Sunday for the following week.  Pro Tip:  Order one month at a time and check it off your mental list.

LOWER SCHOOL IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • FROM MRS. MITCHELL:  Memory work is foundational at the grammar level of classical education.  After just 2 full weeks of school students have locked in facts about how the Bible is organized, books of the Bible songs, new verses and catechism questions, grammar chants, math facts, the beginning of their new (32 card) history songs, poetry, and science facts.  Classes shared a sampling of these during our all school Forum time this week, giving older classes a chance to review beloved material from earlier grades.  They also learned or reviewed The Doxology.  We echo those words of praise for this week’s work!  “Praise God from whom all blessings flow. Praise Him, all creatures here below.  Praise Him above ye heavenly host. Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.”

 

UPPER SCHOOL IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • NEW DATE:  Upper School Bonfire on Friday, 9/4 from 6:30 – 8:30.  5th – 12th grade students are invited!  The bonfire will be at the lower school campus.
  • Wednesday snack cart: The senior class will be selling snacks at lunchtime every Wednesday, alongside hot lunch. Students should bring cash if they would like to buy something.
  • Student FACTS accounts: Each student in 6th-12th grade should have an invitation to FACTS in his / her school email. This will allow students to check their own grades.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Grubb and Mrs. Weber)

  • Our TK students continued learning to be good students in the classroom this week. We worked on listening skills and practiced building muscles through various songs and activities. At this point TK students have learned 16 songs and chants in their short 2 weeks of school! We continue to review so that these will be committed to memory as we learn more and more. Students learned to skywrite numbers 4-6 and were introduced to pattern blocks. Ask your child to skywrite for you this weekend and tell you about pattern blocks. Students also drew a picture of themselves and we graphed how many boys and how many girls are in each class. The boys are the majority this year! We will begin centers (small groups) next week so this week we practiced by participating in play centers. This was a great way to show students that they will visit all centers, but only with his/her group. A highlight of the week was visiting the forest and going on a treasure hunt! We first learned how to be safe in the forest. Ask your child what the treasure was. (It was the Bible). We talked about how the Bible was written by God for us and that everything in it is true. We continued working on learning Ecclesiastes 9:10. Next week we will introduce the story of Creation and a new Bible verse.

3rd
  • Third grade students worked on two songs that are full of art vocabulary:  The Elements of Shape and the Nine Fundamental Laws of Drawing. We will be using the Elements to decorate the covers of our sketchbooks. 
4th
  • Fourth grade art students worked on the Elements of Shape song and the Nine Fundamental Laws of Drawing song, which both contain many art vocabulary words that we will use throughout our art classes together. We began learning about the seven elements of art which we will use to decorate our sketchbooks: line, shape, form, color, value, space, and texture.

  • Students did a great job in PE this week with following directions, practicing procedures, and playing various directional games. I want to extend a special thank you to my second grade students! They had the most interesting PE this week and their ability to follow directions quickly was remarkable and much appreciated.

  • Students did a great job in music this week following directions and practicing procedures. Students worked on sitting and standing with correct posture and how to properly breath to sing. Students then applied this knowledge to their singing of “Non Nobis”. Second, third, and fourth graders also worked on singing two part harmony in “Non Nobis”.  Students  worked on the “Doxology” and the first verse of “Holy, Holy, Holy” as well.

This Week: 
  • Our kindergarten scholars have grown so much in just a couple weeks of school! In math, we learned how to sort by size and how to problem solve using the four-step process: listen, make a plan, solve the problem, check your work. This week we also had our very first math test! The students did a great job in following along and listening to instructions. In phonics, we started working on our cursive clockface letters, specifically “a, c, d, o, and g.” We also reviewed their corresponding sounds with flashcards. In art, history, and science, we finished discussing how God created the world and completed our creation magnets. The students loved putting them together and singing our seven days of  creation song as we made them.

This Week: 
  • We wrapped up chapter 1 in math this week where the students learned about adding within 10. The students enjoyed seeing their growth in completing the timed math fact sheet. We finished our reading about Leif The Lucky in history. The students learned about the northern cardinal in Science. In reading Alfred the King, the students were introduced to the battle between the Saxons and the Vikings. They will learn more about that in other grades. We tied our art to reading this week when the kids had the opportunity to make crowns.  In grammar, along with continuing to cover common and proper nouns, the students learned about how to retell a story after listening to a reading of the Tortoise and the Hare. In cursive, the students completed their practice and review of properly forming numbers. The children mastered the second half of list A in spelling this week. In Forum, they are making great strides in memorizing The Pledge of Allegiance, a quote from The Declaration of Independence, and the preambles to the U.S. Constitution and the N.C. Constitution.

This Week: 
  • The adventures continue in second grade.  This week in History we learned about Cain and Abel and how we need to be sure our actions are right and that our hearts are in the right place.  We started a new book, Tornado.  The author, Betsy Byars, was born in Charlotte, NC and wrote over 60 books.  Our science unit this quarter is Marvelous Me.  We have studied cells, and this week we started on the brain. It truly is amazing the way God created our body.  While learning about God’s amazing creation the students are also learning how to make a science journal.  Students were excited to begin learning how to mark sentences in Grammar. Mrs. Sarah Johnston has been kind enough to arrange music to sing what we memorize of Hebrews 11. We were all very excited to continue learning the beautiful song this week. Have a blessed and restful weekend!

This week:
  • Third grade dived into the world of the Greeks and the Trojans. After reading our first class book called The Trojan Horse, students began forming opinions on what really caused the Greeks to go to war. Was it because the Trojans took Helen, their beloved queen, or was it because they were tired of paying tolls to cross the Aegean Sea? Who knows? We also learned about rounding to the nearest ten and hundred as well as learning about the Mycenaean culture in history. Latin has been more exciting with chants and more vocabulary. Most importantly, students have also been improving their study skills and learning how to become more independent.

This Week
  • We had a full and exciting week of learning together! In Math, we continued building on our understanding of place value as we explored rounding and comparing numbers.
  • Science was especially exciting as we discovered that each seed contains a dormant baby plant, waiting for the right conditions to “wake up.” We were amazed to learn that seeds can remain dormant for thousands of years—including beans found in King Tutankhamun’s tomb that later germinated and grew into plants. What a wonderful reminder of God’s provision through something as small as a seed, which can provide nourishment for us to enjoy.
  • In History, we were introduced to the Barbarians and Vikings and learned about the role these fierce warriors played in the fall of the Western Roman Empire and the formation of the Germanic Kingdoms.
  • It has been a fun and busy week! We hope you enjoy the long weekend ahead and have the opportunity to rest and make memories with your family.

5th-6th Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Sixth grade did a great job reviewing the basics of playing from last year and working on several rhythm exercises. New sixth grade  students are doing a great job getting caught up and returning students are doing well making more mature sound. Fifth grade worked on counting rhythms, reading music, and how to use their lips to make a sound on their mouthpieces. Students also learned how to put their instruments together and take them apart so that we can start playing our first couple of notes next week. 
7th-8th Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students also did a great job playing through several book exercises.. A lot of focus was put on posture, breathing,  making good sounds, articulation, and dynamics. Just a reminder students will need their Foundations for Superior Performance  book by next week. 
High School Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students also did a great job playing through several book exercises and other pieces of music. A lot of focus was put on posture, breathing,  making good sounds, articulation, and dynamics.  Students spent a lot of time on their full-range concert F scale and arpeggio. Students will be tested on this soon.

5th – 8th Choir
  • 5th Choir – We continued to apply basic solfeggio to music exercises as well as study various rhythms. We had our first rhythm test which everyone did great on!
  • 6th Choir – We continued to work on applying solfeggio and counting to songs and given rhythms. We also worked on the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy and learned the background story of its composer. We also had our first rhythm and singing tests this week, which the kids did a great job on!
  • 7th/8th Choir – We began learning the original Patrick Doyle’s Non Nobis, Domine, as well as continue to work songs in minor keys. We also worked on the hymn Holy, Holy, Holy and learned the background story of its composer. We had our first rhythm test this week which the kids did great on!
High School Choir/Bradford Chorale
  • We are having fun reviving some old repertoire, working on blending and balancing as a new group this year. We also began learning the original Non Nobis, Domine composed by Patrick Doyle. We continued to study chord structures and inversions, and added rhythm studies this week. We will do our first rhythm test next week.

This Week
  • The students had their first math test this week, which they all worked so hard on! In math, we have continued to learn about decimal places and how to turn a fraction into a decimal and vice versa. We continue our trek through Middle Earth with Mr. Baggins and the dwarves. As we explore Middle Earth we also continue to learn about real explorers like Prince Henry (last week) and Christopher Columbus (this week). We read accounts of Columbus’ expedition while also looking at a map of his route. We began learning about the skeletal system in science class and the students have begun to prepare to take their first science quiz on the 8th. We had a busy week but the students continue to work and have adjusted well to the upper campus life!

5th Art
  • In art this week, students reviewed two songs we had learned previously: The Elements of Shape and the Nine Fundamental Laws of Drawing. Each contains the building blocks and various art techniques we will use in seeking to create realistic artwork this year. We are creating new covers for our sketchbooks identifying the seven elements of art: line, shape, form, color, value, space, and texture. The students are continuing to be encouraged to develop in their ability to notice details in God’s intricately designed world. This is the first step in creating realistic artwork. Our first artist of the quarter, Leonardo da Vinci was passionate about OBSERVING! We began learning about him on Thursday and will continue next week.

6th Reading and Literature
  • In Literature, we continued reading The Sign of the Beaver while strengthening our ability to identify key details and write clear, concise chapter summaries.
6th Grammar and Writing
  • In Grammar and Writing, we practiced subject–verb agreement and completed ANI charts based on The Lost Tools of Writing. Using “The King and His Hawk,” students considered whether the king should have killed the hawk and organized their ideas into affirmative, negative, and interesting categories.
6th Bible
  • In Bible, we continued our study of the Gospels with a focus on Matthew. Students began taking notes in their journals by defining the word gospel, including its original Greek meaning.
6th History
  • In History, we studied Jacksonian Democracy, examining the expansion of political participation and the significant changes that occurred in American government during Andrew Jackson’s presidency.
6th Math
  • In Math, we focused on decimals by reviewing place value and practicing the multiplication of decimal numbers.

  • Using what we’ve learned about the process of scientific investigation, your students engaged in a lab activity testing the number of water drops that will fit on a penny.  Students conducted many trials, on both the heads and the tails sides of their penny, averaged the results from each of their trials and compared their data with  that of other groups.  We then engaged in good discussion about the possible reasons for  their results and worked at drawing some conclusions.  One thing we ALL learned is that MANY more drops of water can fit on a penny than we had hypothesized!  Finally, your middle schooler worked at creating a bar graph to visually display their class results.  Good work, scientists!

  •  Literature: After a short introduction to the world of the ancient Mesopotamians, we began reading The Epic of Gilgamesh, comparing their worldview of humanity and the divine with the biblical understanding of the one true, sovereign God.  Students quickly decided that they would much rather live in a world ruled by our holy, just, and unchanging God versus the capricious gods they learned about this week.
  • Writing: Students completed their first paragraphs, worked on sentence variety, and were assigned their first major essay: a comparison paper examining the biblical flood account in Genesis alongside the flood account in The Epic of Gilgamesh.
  • History: We continued our study of Ancient Mesopotamia and its major cities.

  • This week was all about reviewing concepts learned in previous years of math class, including multiplying and dividing decimal, rules of  divisibility, and geometric definitions. The students are quickly learning the importance of personal discipline in completing their daily work, including checking and completely correcting missed problems. We ended the week with our second cumulative math test.

  • We are examining the Roman Empire and the early Church.  Students have completed reading questions for Eusebius reading as well as the Spielvogel reading packet.  We have also begun creative writing reflections on what it would be like to be a Christian during this time period.

  • Using what we’ve learned about the process of scientific investigation, your students engaged in a lab activity testing the number of water drops that will fit on a penny.  Students conducted many trials, on both the heads and the tails sides of their penny, averaged the results from each of their trials and compared their data with  that of other groups.  We then engaged in good discussion about the possible reasons for  their results and worked at drawing some conclusions.  One thing we ALL learned is that MANY more drops of water can fit on a penny than we had hypothesized!   Your middle schooler then worked at creating a bar graph to visually display their class results.  After learning about cohesion, adhesion and surface tension (important properties of water),  your 8th graders performed the same experiment on various other liquids and compared this data with previous findings.  Good work, scientists!

  • We wrapped up our first unit on linear functions with a unit test. The students are becoming fluent in the language of algebra and they’re learning how to recognize functions both by their domain and range, as well as by their graph. We then moved on to learning about the Domain of Real Numbers. Ask your student if they can explain to you the difference between a rational and an irrational number.

  • We have been learning the importance of definitions. When we are precise in what we say, we make our arguments clear and understandable. Definitions help “clear up” for our listeners or readers exactly what we mean.

Seniors are jumping into their busy schedules…Senior Thesis Research, fund raising for the Senior Trip, applying to colleges and scholarships, seeking out internships, and more!

 

Juniors, Sophomores, Freshman and their parents are invited to the Info Night coming up on Thursday, September 3.  We will gather in the FBC Sanctuary at 5 PM to hear an overview of some of the big moments ahead in their high school career.

 

10th-12th Graders will attend the ACC College Fair in the morning on September 29.

 

9th-12th Graders have the opportunity to hear from Patrick Henry College Student Recruiter Kaitlyn Marr in the FBC Sanctuary on Friday, September 25 from 8:00-8:30 AM.

  • Students completed their unit material on the Age of Discovery, took a test and have begun preparing for a reenactment on Monday (8/31) that will bring events from 500 years ago back to life! We will study the Reformation and its religious and political consequences next.

  •  Students have been discussing Bunyan’s allegory in The Pilgrim’s Progress. We will be taking a test over the novel after Labor Day.

  •  We continue to compare and contrast different philosophers’ view of rhetoric, noting how powerful human speech is, and how remarkable a responsibility it is to speak with intent to persuade others.  Students found ads for various products or services and we discussed their rhetorical effect.

9th Bible Survey
  • We have learned that the promises of God to Adam & Eve, and also Abraham, continue to be upheld by God when the children of Israel are in Egypt and under the slavery of Pharoah.
  • God’s provision of redemption comes to pass in the life of Moses, as well as the great event of Passover, and both point to the person and work of Jesus, our Passover Lamb.

9th Biology
  • The students had the opportunity to learn about the life and legacy of Carolus Linnaeus, the “Father of Taxonomy”. We learned about his system of binomial nomenclature and the system of classification that he built off of the use of dichotomous keys. The students then had the opportunity to classify 15 different organisms using a dichotomous key. We will take our first unit exam next week.
9th Geometry
  • We wrapped up our first unit this week with a few lessons on measuring, adding, and classifying angles. We also learned about the importance of not making assumptions about geometric drawings, but instead looking for specific markings of angle size and congruency. We ended the week with our first cumulative test.

  • The past few weeks have been focused on reviewing grammar and vocabulary through reading, writing, listening and speaking. We have been hard at work on irregular preterite verbs as well.

  • We practiced solving for one variable in terms of other ones, including applications to some simple real-world models. We’re currently reviewing for Monday’s unit test.

  • Students completed reading selections from Aesop’s Fables and the Old Testament book of Proverbs.  They will give a brief accounting of what fables stood out to them as well as share how the poetic book of Proverbs has made an impact on their lives.  Next week students will write a comparison or contrast of these works–are they teaching the same morals? How does Proverbs point to the need for a Savior, etc.  Students will also take a quiz on the Greek and Roman names of their gods.  And it is never too late to start practicing Declamation selections!!

  • Students completed a deep dive in Judges this week which set up the start of Israel’s Kingdom era under Kings Saul and David. We will continue that topic next week as we consider a few more lessons from David, the life of Solomon and the divided kingdoms. Some key topics of discussion this week included:
    • What lessons can we learn from Gideon on how God builds our faith and tests our faith?
    • How important is it to keep our word before God? Are there ways to ransom/avoid hasty and sinful vows? We briefly considered Leviticus 27 while comparing and contrasting Jephthah’s vow (Judges 11) and Saul’s vow (1 Samuel 14)

10th Historical Theology 
  • Students have completed their memory quizzes on the Apostles’ Creed and are preparing for their papers on a creedal affirmation (Due 9.24). This week, students have considered the historical context leading up to the Council of Nicaea (325AD). We have primary focused on: 
    • 3 Major Persecutions.
    • 2 Major Theological Controversies.
    • The significance of imperial involvement in Church affairs.

11th Precalculus
  • We learned how to find roots of quadratics using factoring as well as the graphing calculator. We kicked off our unit on the general theory of functions with a discussion of sandwiches, and will soon narrow our focus to specific functions and their features.
11th Physics
  • We trained our ability to use the velocity vs time graph to describe various aspects of motion, and will soon meet our first one-dimensional kinematic equations.

  •  This week we discussed the fall of the Roman Empire and the influx of Germanic kingdoms following the western Empire’s end. The students also read an article on the various views of church and state in anticipation for their debate.

12th Rhetoric III
  • Seniors are meeting with mentors, researching, and asking questions. Thesis is a long road and they have started off well. Please continue to pray for our seniors as their chreias begin this coming Wednesday.

  • Students read the chapter, “The Canon of Scripture,”  from  our class text  and engaged in a thoughtful discussion over the material, including how to respond to groups calling for an open and ongoing canon.  We also discussed the importance to our faith that we know the church has recognized the right books for the canon of scripture.

12th Calculus
  • This week we learned another algebraic method for determining limits – the Squeeze Theorem.  We also began looking at the topic of continuity – defining continuity at a point and determining continuity over an interval.
12th Physics
  • We completed our basic introduction to kinematics.  After a test on the topic next week, we will expand our study by looking at two types of one dimensional motion (vertical and horizontal).
