LOWER SCHOOL IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • FROM MRS. MITCHELL:  During P.E. class with Kindergarten this week we were reminded of how much children delight in obeying.  They wanted to know exactly what to do, which whistle meant to freeze and which one meant to run to line.  We were actually training for safety and first time obedience, but to them it felt like a game.  Not all of life can be like that, but capitalizing on their desire to please the adults who love them makes everyone happy.  We pray, as your family continues to hone your routines at home, that you will experience this same joy mentioned in Proverbs 16:20, “Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.”

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Grubb and Mrs. Weber)

  • We had a wonderful first week of TK! We spent much of our time learning to be students in the classroom and this will continue into next week. Students began learning several songs and chants. We began learning the very first Bible verse which was Ecclesiastes 9:10. This verse tells us to work hard and do our best even when it feels hard. We will refer back to this verse often throughout the year. Students learned our classroom rules and we learned a song to remember to listen and obey. In math, students were able to use teddy bear counters, practiced identifying same and different and began learning to skywrite numbers 1-3. See if your child can show you the skywriting he/she learned and say the jingles for each number. (The number jingles are in his/her black folder for reference.) We practiced our listening skills this week by playing games and identifying sounds. We learned friends and teachers names this week and introduced ourselves by shaking hands. Our first show & tell was Thursday and each student did so well showing and telling about what he/she brought. Students were able to learn the recess boundaries and played several times on the playground this week. Next week we look forward to introducing the Bible to the students. We will also introduce numbers 4-6, a new math material, and activities that practice fine motor skills and listening skills.

  • This week in art, students learned about the Four Respects of Art class including respect for time, materials, classmates, and the teacher. We added our memory work to our sketchbooks and learned about some of the art projects we will be doing this year.

  • Students did a great job in music this week following directions and practicing procedures. Students worked on sitting and standing with correct posture and how to properly breath to sing. Students then applied this knowledge to their singing of “Non Nobis”. Second, third, and fourth graders also worked on singing two part harmony in “Non Nobis”.

This Week: 
  • Our kindergarten scholars had a great first week! In math, we learned how to sort objects by color, sameness, alikeness, difference, and shape. We are also learning how to write the numbers 0-6. In phonics, we practiced the phonograms “a, c, d, g, o, and qu,” and started learning the cursive strokes for the letter “a.” In history, art, and science, we discussed how God created the world and started working on our creation magnets. The students are adjusting quickly to life at Bradford and are doing a good job with the procedures and routines. Throughout this school year, the senior students will be coming during our Monday lunch time to read to the students – which is always a highlight! We are praying for a fruitful year and we hope that you all have a restful weekend!

1st Grade (Ms. Griffin & Mrs. Smith)

This Week: 
  • First grade had a great first full week! The students got into their new math books, learned new math vocabulary words, worked on sums through 10, and related facts (commutative property of addition). They also began learning how to update the calendar, days in school, write down the temperature. and predict the weatherIn history we began reading about the explorers; starting with Erik the Red and his son Leif Erikson. The students were able to cut out and glue in their first pictures in their history journals, write a quote from the story, and color the pictures. In reading we read Ella Sings Jazz about Ella Fitzgerald and the students enjoyed listening to a few of her songs. The students learned the first ten words from list A in spelling and how to use their spelling log books as well as the “Words I Use When I Write” booklet. The kids have been practicing how to write their numbers as this is important for math in addition to helping them remember how to make circles, lines, and curves that will be valuable in cursive. In grammar, we have talked about common and proper nouns as they relate to people. We’ve been practicing the single letter phonograms as a review from last year. In science (biology) and art we walked through the story of creation with the kids as we made an artistic rendition of the first six days.

This Week: 
  • The emphasis in second grade this week has been on listening and following instructions and focusing on the task at hand.  Both skills will enable the students to excel in future assignments.  In math we have been reviewing addition strategies.  In Latin we learned greeting words.  Be sure to listen to the CD at home to help the students become familiar with Latin words.  The students enjoyed learning about life on the prairie with Noah in our second book, Prairie School by Avi.  It is hard for the students to imagine a home like Noah’s that had no books.  How thankful we are for the access we have to books.  We added the next verse to our history song—The Fall in the Garden. The students are such eager learners, and having them in our classes is such a delight.

  • Ask your child about a goal they set in our grammar lesson. We had some interesting ones!

This Week 
  • Third grade had a busy full week of school! In history, students took their first steps into the world of ancient Greece, starting with the Minoan civilization in 2200 B.C. Then, we also dove into math with rounding, comparing numbers and some addition math facts. We read several chapters of Black Ships Before Troy, which is the prerequisite for The Trojan Horse and learning about the Trojan War! We reviewed synonyms and antonyms in grammar and also reviewed appropriate uses for “a” and “an.” Overall, a great second week!

This Week

Week 2 St Augustine

  • We’ve had a wonderful first week of full lessons! We’ve had a strong start in math, beginning with a review of place value and understanding how to write numbers in standard form, number name, and expanded form. Students jumped right back into spelling and Key Word outlining. We introduced our first historical Church Father, St. Augustine, and discussed how he asserted Scripture in arguments against heretical teachings of the day. Students reviewed Latin conjugations and new vocabulary, and we reviewed how to ‘Crack the Code’ in Latin!  Adding P.E., Art, and Music classes was another big addition to our week! Forum time  brought insightful discussion around Grace and Mercy, and from Matthew 7:12, “…this is the Law and the Prophets.”

5th-6th Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students need to turn in their Band Handbook Contract by Tuesday, 8/25. Parents please make sure to add the concert dates from the Band Handbook to your calendar if you have not  done so already. Sixth grade did a great job reviewing the basics of playing from last year and working on several rhythm exercises. Fifth grade worked on counting rhythms, reading music, and how to use their lips to make a sound on their instruments. Fifth graders will need to bring their instruments to school on Tuesday 8/25. 
7th-8th Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students need to turn in their Band Handbook Contract by Tuesday, 8/25. Parents please make sure to add the concert dates from the Band Handbook to your calendar if you have not done so already. Students also did a great job playing through several book exercises. A lot of focus was put on posture, breathing, and making good sounds.  
High School Band
  • Students did a great job in band this week practicing procedures and expectations for class. Students need to turn in their Band Handbook Contract by Monday 8/24. Students also did a great job playing through several book exercises and other pieces of music. A lot of focus was put on posture, breathing,  making good sounds, articulation, and dynamics.

5th – 8th Choir
  • In  5th & 6th choirs we created a staff on the floor and practiced our music by stepping on the notes. The goal was to feel the notes and rhythms, not just to read and sing them.
  • In 7th/8th choir we introduced minor keys and how to find “Do”. We practiced several exercises in minor keys to better get the feel and flow of the minor scale.
High School Choir
  • We continued studying chord structures and how to find them within a key. We also discussed the major scale pattern and how to create a major scale from any given note. Finally, we had a lot of fun learning Wonderful Grace of Jesus, an old but delightful hymn.

5th Grade (Mr. Chapman & Miss Johnston)

This Week
  • The students had a wonderful week. We learned about estimations and place value in math class, began our biology unit in science class, reviewed the four types of sentences in grammar class and started  our rough drafts in writing class. The students have thoroughly enjoyed reading the Hobbit and getting to know Mr. Bilbo Baggins and the band of dwarves. The students are learning how to be better organized, take ownership of their belongings and work and lead a more  orderly life. We emphasize that God is a God of order and we are to emulate that in everything we do. Please also continue to emphasize this at home!

5th Art
  • In art  this week we learned that our creative abilities are due to us being image bearers of God. We looked up verses in Scripture about this and discussed the implications of being image bearers. In class we say that God Himself is the Greatest Artist, and the rest of us are just copycats. And wonder of  wonders, He created without any materials! On Thursday we began learning about the seven elements of art: line, shape, form, color, texture, value, and space. We are using each of these  to decorate the covers of our sketchbooks.

6th Reading and Literature
  • In Literature, students continued reading The Sign of the Beaver, completing Chapters 3–4. We followed Matt’s early experiences alone in the wilderness and discussed the challenges he faces as he begins learning to survive independently.
6th Grammar and Writing
  • In Grammar and Writing, students strengthened their command of punctuation and capitalization rules through review and application. In writing, we used the Lost Tools of Writing approach to construct an ANI chart, organizing ideas according to Affirmative, Negative, and Interesting considerations in preparation for thoughtful composition.
6th Bible
  • In Bible, we continued our study of the Gospel of Matthew, examining the genealogy of Christ and discussing its significance. Students considered how Matthew’s genealogy connects Jesus to God’s covenant promises and demonstrates His identity as the promised Messiah.
6th History
  • In History, our focus this week was the Erie Canal and its historical significance in the growth of the United States. Students examined how the canal transformed transportation and trade, encouraged westward expansion, and strengthened economic connections between the eastern states and the growing West.
6th Math
  • In Math, students learned to evaluate algebraic expressions and explored the purpose of variables as representations of unknown or changing quantities. We also reinforced foundational decimal skills through continued review and application.

  • Your 6th graders engaged in excellent discussion this week about the discrepant events they observed last week in science.  Many interesting hypotheses were proposed to explain the unexpected observations.  We learned more about the scientific method that scientists use to answer questions about interesting, mysterious or unknown phenomena in the physical world.  We also practiced making hypotheses about how many textbooks four raw eggs could hold before cracking under the pressure.  Ask your student about the surprising strength of the marvelous chicken egg!

  • In Logic, we discussed three qualities necessary for becoming a thoughtful logician: cultivating an inquiring mind, listening carefully, and being willing to hear and consider opposing viewpoints.     • Literature: We read the biblical account of the Flood and began comparing it with other flood accounts in preparation for reading The Epic of Gilgamesh next week.
  • History: Mr. Vogel visited our class this week and shared a helpful acronym to help us place important events on a timeline. We also began our unit study of the Ancient Near East, which will provide a foundation for our study of ancient civilizations and the ways in which their development was shaped by their geographical locations. 
  • Composition: Students learned how to use the Cornell Note-Taking Method to organize, summarize, and review their notes. This method helps students identify key information, make connections, and use their notes effectively for studying and deeper learning.

  • This week we reviewed applying the four fundamental operations of arithmetic. We practiced identifying clue words within word problems in order to determine which operation to apply and how to use inverse operations to solve for an unknown value. We ended the week with our first unit test. Moving forward, math notebooks will be due every Friday, which is the day of our weekly math test.

  • Your 8th graders engaged in excellent discussion this week about the discrepant events they observed last week in science.  Many interesting hypotheses were proposed to explain the unexpected observations.  We learned more about the scientific method that scientists use to answer questions about interesting, mysterious or unknown phenomena in the physical world.  We further discussed the scope of science and its role in answering questions about the natural and physical world….i.e., the created universe.  Conversely, we talked about the fact that science is not intended to answer questions about the spiritual world…i.e. God, angels, miracles, etc.  Your students put their scientific skills to work as we began a lab testing how many water drops can fit on the head of a penny.  Our results and findings will be shared next week!

  • We wrapped up our first unit on linear functions with a lesson on graphing functions. The students are becoming fluent in the language of algebra and they’re learning how to recognize functions both by their domain and range, as well as by their graph. Their first unit test will take place on Tuesday, August 25th.

  • Freshmen students learned about the adventures of Cortez and Pizarro and the conquest and destruction of Aztec and Incan empires.  We considered the advantages that led to Spanish success and each student had to assess which advantage was most decisive and defend their assertion. We also considered the justifications (and whether they were legitimate) that Spain used to defend their actions in the New World.

  •  Students learned from the Book of Genesis – creation, man made male & female in God’s image, creation mandates (work, family, worship), the rise of evil in the world, God’s world-wide flood, and the age of the patriarchs (Noah, Job, Abraham, Issac, & Jacob).

9th Biology
  • This week we reviewed the scientific method and discussed the unique limitations of science, including its inability to provide final answers, especially to questions of faith. We looked at a few of the obsolete scientific laws and theories that were held in high regard, sometimes for thousands of years, before being rendered obsolete. Ask your student about the theory of spontaneous generation and how it was eventually debunked by the experiments of Redi and Pasteur.
9th Geometry
  • Our first geometry unit is in full swing. This week, we explored our first four postulates (or axioms) regarding lines, points, planes, and space. The students also learned to distinguish between the words equal and congruent. We added two new formulas to our Geometry Resource Books: The Midpoint Formula and The Distance Formula. We’ve also learned how to construct our first two-column proofs.

9th and 11th Art Foundations
  • We began with art analysis this week. As the students observe and study pieces of art they are to test it against Phil. 4:8 to see how much of the art meets the criteria of this verse. They are quickly discovering that there is a lot to be appreciated about art, but not all of the messaging of the art ought to be trusted since it is in opposition to God’s Word. We have also labeled some of the art as a poisoned apple. It may appear beautiful, but if the message of the artist is taken to heart it will destroy you. It is my hope that by the end of this year they will be able to identify poison apples and instead cultivate a taste for the most excellent forms of beauty.

  • This week we continued our introduction to terms and topics that we will further develop as the year progresses.
  • Next week we will conclude our introduction to the study of matter, and the students will take their first test of Q1.

  • We reviewed equation-solving, including situations when our practice with LCMs helped the equations look neater. We began to work with inequalities and absolute values, including graphical representations of both.

  • 10th graders completed reading assignments from Aesop’s Fables and began reading the Old Testament book of Proverbs to compare and contrast these samples of ancient wisdom literature.  Students learned about Aesop and also background information about the book of Proverbs.  In the upcoming weeks students will write an essay either comparing or contrasting selections from these works and present a summary of the essay to the class.

  •  Students gave their first speeches of the year! We will be doing rotating speeches every Friday this year. I am excited to watch the students grow.

  • Students briefly surveyed the early history of Israel through its patriarchs and Moses’ deliverance of the people from slavery in Egypt. On Friday, students took their first geography quiz and we watched a video that identified archaeological evidence for the historical existence of Joshua’s altar on Mt. Ebal.

  • Students have explored the origins and content of the Apostles’ Creed. They will be quizzed on their memorization of the A.C. on August 27th, and should be thinking about which creedal affirmation they will write on (Paper due Sept. 24th).

  • We learned how to use graphing calculators to find curves of best fit. We also worked on factoring of polynomials and its applications.
11th Physics
  • We discussed the meaning of instantaneous vs average velocities, relative velocities, and instantaneous vs average accelerations. We also learned how to relate those variables to  graphs of position vs time and acceleration vs time.

  •  This week we did an overview of the Roman Empire and how  Constantine was a transitional figure who facilitated the emergence of the medieval world, especially with regard to the spread of Christianity and the alliance of Church and State.

  • We discussed the key components of the Christian worldview, and explored some biblical-theological foundations of apologetics.

  • Students were introduced to HIIT-style training (High Intensity Interval Training). This week’s focus was on our lower body strength and core body strength. We are going on long walks and starting to introduce sports skills as valuable ways to help our bodies stretch out and recover after exercising.

  • Students have nearly completed their Age of Discovery unit material and will take up the Reformation and its religious and political effects on Europe (from 1517 to 1648) next. Each of the seniors concluded this week by presenting a short summary on the life of one of the famous explorers of the 16th-century.

12th Rhetoric III
  •  Seniors are off and running! They are researching, meeting, and discussing their big topics. Please keep our seniors in your prayers as we continue to traverse senior thesis together.

12th Systematic Theology
  • We continued our discussion about Systematic Theology, including  “How to do ST” with an emphasis on the necessity of personal piety (prayer, humility, and etc).  Introduction to “The Doctrine of the Word of God”

12th Calculus
  • We spent the week learning more about limits – estimating values from tables, estimating values using algebraic properties, using the squeeze theorem, and connecting multiple representations of limits.
12th Physics
  • We introduced vector quantities this week and learned to distinguish between distance/displacement and speed/velocity.  We learned how to calculate velocity and to read it from a position/time graph.  Students also learned the difference between average and instantaneous velocity and completed a lab to estimate the velocity of a ball under a few different conditions.
