FROM THE TEACHER’S DESK

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Grubb)

Theme Adventure
  •  TK is complete!  Praise the Lord for a wonderful year.  The teachers have thoroughly enjoyed their time with the students and are thankful to be a part of their growth and preparation for their academic career.  A strong start to education builds a firm and confident foundation for the children to grow upon.  The year was full of imaginative and guided play, laughs, songs, challenges and building relationships.  Thank you for allowing us to be your partners in education.  We hope everyone has a fantastic summer!

Lower School P.E. (Mr. Davis)

K – 5th
  • Because of testing this week, the students didn’t have PE.

Lower School Music (Mrs. Bennington)

K-5th
  •  Kindergarten, first grade, and second grade did not have music this week due to testing.  Third, fourth, and fifth grade students practiced for the Patriotic Program after lunch each day this week.  Students are doing a great job and we are all looking forward to the Patriotic Program performance.

Kindergarten (Mrs. Lopes and Mrs. Rivera)

This Week
  •  This week our kindergarten students had their first field trip! We were able to visit the council chamber at City Hall and talk with a council member. The students  were so well behaved and really interacted with what Mr. White shared with them by asking thoughtful questions at the end.
  • We finished our math curriculum and have spent time this week reviewing math facts and concepts. The students  wrote Proverbs 1:7 in their best cursive handwriting to hang on the walls outside our classrooms for the Patriotic Program. And we are still working on our human bodies to send home this Friday. We are also reviewing phonograms and spelling words by playing memory and competition games. We are proud of how much these students have learned this year!
Memory Work:
  • Review all verses!

1st Grade (Mrs. Morgan & Mr. Law)

This Week
  •  We have been doing our standardized testing this week and the students have been real troopers. In the afternoons, we have also been finishing up a final history book, “T is for Tarheel”, which has fun facts about our state. In addition, we have also been practicing “Bible Bee” in order to be ready for the big day. We have been combining art and science this week to make rainbows. We took Science class into the kitchen this week and made a walking rainbow using food coloring, cups and paper towels.  In art we worked on a watercolor gradient based on “The Umbrellas” by Renoir. Only a few more days left in the school year and first grade is finishing strong!

They finished their study of human features and combined their efforts into a self portrait. We worked on a few frescos based on those from the Minoan period, and polished our “Latish” plays, which will be performed next week. This was just  a fun activity for students to showcase their knowledge of Latin vocabulary. It was a fun week of applying all the things we have studied this year! Next week we look forward to the Bradford Bible Bee and field day!

Mr. Davis

6th -10th PE
  • This week the students supported the seniors by listening to their thesis presentations.

Mrs. Fairchild

9th Grade Advanced Art

  • We have recently had some brief discussions on the Hitler’s impact on the art world.  We looked at how the Nazi regime perpetuated these atrocities for generations against the Jewish people and how the art restitution battle is just beginning. Sadly, there are some cases where the entire Jewish family was killed and there is no opportunity to return the stolen masterpieces to their rightful owners.  Additionally, we have worked in a little time to listen to a few of the senior thesis.  We are looking forward to hearing Josh James’ thesis on the Value of Hand-Made Things.  This will be a great opportunity for 9th graders to carefully analyze the argument and apply some aspects of what they have learned in class to what they hear from Josh.

Mrs. Frueh

6th Grade Science:
  • The students completed their presentations this week for their Famous Scientist project. They also had the opportunity to watch a few of the seniors present and defend their senior theses.
