FROM THE TEACHER’S DESK

GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Grubb)

Bible
  •  This week was the first week in Transitional Kindergarten.  We are very proud of all the students. We focused on introducing and training Bradfords youngest students on how to be a good student.  Bible curriculum begins next week. This week we used Ecclesiastes 9:10 as our reminder to try our best in school.
Theme Adventure
  • The adventure in TK this week was all about exploring the campus.  The forest, the playground, and even the playroom is new and exciting!
Literacy
  • This week we played many songs and games that taught us how to listen.
  • We learned how to shake hands and look each other in the eyes.  We used a stamp as our happy helper to remind us which hand is our right hand.
  • TK also played games to identify the differences between letters, numbers, shapes, and pictures.
  • The students used wood pieces to identify big lines, small lines, big curves and small curves.  All of these will be used to form capital letters a little later on in the year.
Math
  •  TK students were introduced to two math materials we will be using in the classroom throughout the year.  Teddy Bear counters and Pattern (shape) blocks were used and explained.
  • The students learned to sky write the numbers 1-4.
Arts and Sciences
  • TK drew themselves on the first day of school.  It was interesting to see how they represented themselves.
  • The focus this week was on how to be a good student and to become a good and confident citizen in the classroom.

Kindergarten (Mrs. Rivera & Mrs. McDorman)

This Week
  • Our kindergarten scholars are working hard at memorizing! (The Pledge of Allegiance, a quote from the Declaration of Independence, the Preamble to the US Constitution, Proverbs 1:7, and 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a) 1 Corinthians is teaching us how to love one another in very practical ways: keeping the bathrooms clean, walking quietly in the halls, listening to your teacher, and first time obedience. We discussed time and learned that in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Before there was a universe, there was God. God created out of nothing (creatio ex nihilo). Our scholars learned this important Latin phrase. In art, we began making creation magnets to help us remember what God created on each day, and in science we talked about the first thing God created: light. Did you know light will do one of three things when it comes to an object? Ask your student what they are.
Music
  • This week we began class with our “Good Morning!” song. Then, we had prayer and started learning our monthly praise verse, Psalm 47:1, and the song that goes with it, “Clap Your Hands”. We spent some time listening to the music of our quarterly composer, Vivaldi. Our lesson was about how music is given by God, for His glory, and our enjoyment. We learned the song, “God Is So Good,” with hand motions. Finally, we practiced our school song, “Non Nobis Domine.”
Memory Work:
  • Review Proverbs 1:7, 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a

1st Grade (Mrs. Campbell & Mrs. Morgan)

This Week
  • First graders had many “firsts” this week including lunch at the shelter with the big kids and changing for P.E.!  They are working hard to learn routines and systems and push through academics to the end of the day. We enjoyed chanting about nouns, memorizing a poem about caterpillars, singing the US border songs, and reviewing time and number concepts.  Next week we will dive into our first primer of the year, Ella Sings Jazz, and begin our Biology Science unit.

2nd Grade (Mrs. Jones)

This Week
  • Second grade tackled their second reader this week, Mouse Soup. While we didn’t actually taste it ourselves, the students agreed that it probably tasted horrible! We also began our first science unit by learning about the Classification of Living Things. Ask your child if they remember the scientific name for lion. Next week we dive into insects, so be on the lookout for an email detailing how our insect collection will work.

3rd Grade (Mrs. Garner)

This Week
  • We have had a wonderful packed week of learning! The students have done a fabulous job with their first lesson in Latin by learning scripture, nouns, verbs, and several conjugations. In the other subjects, we have hit the ground running by having our first tests in spelling, grammar, and history. Math is going well, but some of us have realized the need to make and practice addition fact flashcards at home. It has been such a blessing to see the class grow in their camaraderie in reading partners and in games, such as “trash-ketball”.

4th Grade (Mrs. Hamilton)

This Week
  • This week we have packed in lots of new information from sequences  in Math to the four kinds of sentences in Grammar. The highlight this week has certainly been in Science, when students had a chance to go outside to gather a multitude of colorful things we then observed under the incredible HDMI microscope.
  • As a reminder from last year, the following Latin study schedule is strongly encouraged:
    • Day 1 of a new chapter – students will learn the vocabulary and the chart in class, and will study it further at home.
    • Day 2 – students should review the vocabulary and then “quiz” themselves by filling in sections A & B on the chapter worksheet without looking back to the vocabulary list; they should then study what they left blank and try again.
    • Day 3 – study definitions for the grammar section, review vocabulary.
    • Day 4 – students will study for the quiz on the following day (they should take the quiz in their book as part of their study).

5th Grade (Ms. Windes)

This Week
  • As we finish our first full week, every book has now been opened, used, and explored. All classes have begun including art, PE, music, and science. 100% of the students remembered their PE uniforms even with the switch to Monday PE class! We continued learning routines this week, but students are quickly becoming naturals at fifth grade. By Thursday, they could walk into the classroom and do their morning routine completely independently. We’ve especially enjoyed learning about the Age of Exploration in history this week, focusing on Prince Henry the Navigator of Portugal who was influential in fueling the exploration of the coast of Africa and beyond (though he went on few voyages himself). Math is mostly review at this point, which is perfect as we dust off the cobwebs of summer. We are practicing being precise and thorough in each problem!
  • Upcoming Tests:
    • Thursday: Ch. 2 Latin test
    • Friday: Columbus history test, Spelling Wk. 2 test, Romans 12:3-5

6th Grade (Mrs. Garrett)

This Week
  • One of the most encouraging parts of sixth grade’s week was found in our study of King David, the poet. His words in Psalm 27, using metaphor, repetition and questions, reminded us that God is our light, our salvation, and our fortress. The class continued to look for metaphors in other poems, and penned their own tongue twister poetry as well as ‘Question Poetry.” The students also examined key concepts in I John such as fellowship, heresy, gnosticism and apostleship. In history, the class began a look at President James Monroe and his ideas regarding colonization and interference from European powers. Finally, the concept of an inquiring mind was pursued in logic class. God’s gifts of reason, discovery, inference and conclusion were discussed in science class as a reminder to all of us; pursue knowledge with all diligence and ardor.
  • Upcoming: 8/30: I John test, History Test

Mrs. Frueh

7th Grade Science:
  • We reviewed the scientific method and practiced identifying/designing controlled experiments.

10th Chemistry
  • We just completed our first week of chemistry.  Presently, the students are learning a lot of foundational material and vocabulary that will be used throughout the year.  I am strongly encouraging them to review the notes from class later the same day and once the following day to help them remember the material between class periods.  It would be a help if parents remind them of this at home. Studying is much more time efficient if the material is still fresh in their minds.
  • The first test is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept 4.

Miss Oldham

  • Seventh grade scholars will be creating an Omnibus Copy Book this year.  We began work in our Copy Books this week. Check out the beautiful map of the Fertile Crescent, which your student has designed; or read the narrative of a Genesis story and the illustration which accompanies it.
  • We’ve had many interesting conversations this past week about the characters and events in the book of Genesis.  We’ve learned that, in spite of the many flaws of humans, God desires a relationship with them.
