GRAMMAR SCHOOL

Transitional Kindergarten (Mrs. Davis and Mrs. Luther)

This week was the last week of the 2018/2019 Transitional Kindergarten Program.  Water Day and clean up day was enjoyed by all. We celebrated the end of the program with a day at Lake Michael spent with families.  We are thankful for God’s tremendous blessing on the year.

Kindergarten (Mrs. Rivera & Mrs. McDorman)

Language Arts
  • This week we introduced the /ah/ sound for the letter a. We reviewed special exhibit words such as ma, pa, call, fall, and wall to reinforce the sound recognition of /ah/ in words.
  • Students began reading the last primer Runs From Guns. This story centers around the Great Civil War. The character Will was an eyewitness to the war both at its outset and at its end. Take time to read the back of your students primer to learn more about Wilmer McLean.
  • Special exhibit review: when, from, there, then, them, give, use, fall, wall, their, watch
  • Difficult words: combat, attic, radish, cabin, kitchen, fallen, cabin, Appomattox, cannons

These words should be decoded by focusing on one syllable at a time. We have been using this method in class, and the students should be attacking these words with confidence at home.

Math
  • Writing addition and subtraction fact families; subtraction facts: 9-4, 9-5, 9-3, and 9-6; representing numbers to 500 using pictures; subtraction facts: 7-3, 7-4, 8-3, and 8-5; fact assessment 21, estimating and weighing objects using nonstandard units; exploring standard units of mass.
History
  • We continued our study of our local community and all the people that help make it run smoothly. Policemen, firemen, postal workers, local government officials, health care workers, along with so many others all do their part to keep us safe and healthy in our community. After mailing our letters last week, I am curious to know who has received them. If you have, please let us know! Next week special guests are coming to talk about the history of Mebane and some of the special jobs they do in our community.
